Abstract: A new laser-driven Soft X-Ray beamline provides femtosecond pump and probe beams for time-resolved studies in condensed matter. The beamline offers a unique combination of capabilities optimised for the new technique of ultrafast time-resolvedangle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES). It can record the movie of the femtosecond real-time motion of electrons in materials. The beamline was used tomap the time- and momentum-dependent electronic structure of photoexcited 1T-TaS2 crystal. The splitting of the sub-bands at the Brillouin zone boundary melts in less than 30fs, which is before the lattice has time to respond. This indicates that electronic correlations may play an important role in establishing the charge order.

STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Central Laser Facility (CLF), UK.
Senior scientist with a world-class track record in developing new facilities using ‘soft X-rays’ generated with lasers and using them to discover new science. The facilities proposed and developed are: “Artemis” Ultrafast Facility at the CLF, “Laser-Plasma X-ray Light Source for Nano-Lithography” (at JMAR in USA) and the “Laser-Plasma X-ray and UV Laboratory” (at CLF). These facilities made scientific discoveries in the new fields of: femtosecond real-time movie of electron motion in materials; X-ray microscopy of biological cells; Nano-lithography of semiconductor devices; observation of DNA damage and repair process. Published an original book on “X-rays from laser-plasmas: Generation and Applications”. Published as author or co-author over one hundred journal papers.
