摘要: The manipulation of optical fields and energy flow of light plays a pivotal role in communication and information technologies. Among various means of controlling light, surface waves, such as surface plasmons and surface phonon polaritons, enable confinement and control of electromagnetic energy at the sub-wavelength scale. Surface phonon polaritons are originated from the resonant coupling of photons with optical phonons in polar dielectrics, and they usually exist in the infrared regime. In this talk, Prof.Shen will first show that surface phonon polariton mediated thermal energy transfer can exceed the Planck’s blackbody radiation by three orders of magnitude. Second, he will demonstrate non-resonant and broad-band thermal absorbers or emitters based on hyperbolic metamaterials that can work in the near-field. Finally, he will discuss the unique characteristics of thermal graphene plasmons.

个人简介: Sheng Shen received his bachelor and master degree from the Power Engineering Department, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, in 2000 and 2003, respectively. In 2005, he joined Professor Gang Chen’s group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He obtained his PhD degree from the Mechanical Engineering Department, MIT, in 2010. Prior to joining CMU in September, 2011, he conducted his postdoctoral research with Professor Xiang Zhang at UC-Berkeley, from 2010 to 2011. He is currently Assistant Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Professor Shen is a recipient of NSF CAREER Award and DARPA Young Faculty Award. He also received the Philomathia Foundation Research Fellowship in Alternative Energy Research from UC-Berkeley.
