The direct generation of photon triplets has been a long standing goal in quantum optics. We have recently been able to demonstrate cascaded parametric down-conversion in nonlinear optical waveguides, and demonstrate entanglement in energy-time, as well as in polarization. We have recently also demonstrated the use of these systems to pre-certify the presence of a photon without measuring its quantum state. Our systems could lay the foundations to implement longer distances for loop-hole free Bell inequality tests, as well as used in device independent quantum communications.
