Abstract:
This talk discusses the best practice policies and procedures that have been developed at Emory University designed to maximize output and service associate with the technology transfer and commercialization functions house at the Office of Technology Transfer.  We will review the structure of the OTT, statistics of the university's research and how that relates to patenting volume and strategy, Emory's Product Pipeline, overall licensing activity, royalties received by Emory from OTT activities, and how that those have been distributed to the university and inventors.  We will then go into a snapshot of Emory's startup activities - specifically how Emory OTT gets involved with startup companies, what activities OTT undertakes to make more technologies better prepared for commercialization, and general startup culture in Atlanta, Georgia.

Biography:
    Philip has been in the technology transfer and commercialization field for 10 years. Immediately prior to coming to Emory in 2012, Philip was a principal at the consulting firm Ripple Management. In his role at Ripple, Philip focused mostly on emerging technology start-up company and small university clients, providing services that included contract review and drafting, license and patent strategy, and commercialization and product development plans. Prior to Ripple, Philip worked in the office of the general counsel at Welch Allyn, Inc., a global medical device company, and then joined Blue Highway, LLC, the innovation incubator for Welch Allyn. At Blue Highway Philip performed due diligence, freedom to operate analysis, infringement analysis, patentability analysis and product development strategy. Philip also spent time working at the New York State Science Technology and Law Center serving technology based start-up companies; he formulated and drafted highly detailed intellectual property strategies and business goal implementation schemes for clients of the center. Philip began his career at Cornell University's Center for Technology, Enterprise and Commercialization in 2003.
    Philip holds a Juris Doctor degree with a specialization in Technology Commercialization and Law from Syracuse University College of Law, and a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cell Biology from Cornell University.
