Abstract: This talk will review some of the recent results obtained in our research group. First, I will report on the design and realization of quasi-two-dimensional acoustic metamaterials with double negative behavior (negative mass density and negative bulk modulus) and near-zero dynamical mass density. I will explain that the predicted extraordinary properties of these structures are difficult to achieve experimentally due to the losses associated to the embedded resonances. The second part of the talk will present our experimental demonstration of directional acoustic cloaks in two- and three-dimensions using inverse design. In this topic the main issue to solve is designing feasible cloaks with broadband and omnidirectional behavior.

Biography: Prof. José Sánchez-Dehesa obtained his PhD in physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) in 1982. He is a full professor at the Universitat Politècnica de València where he created the Wave Phenomena Group, belonging to the Department of Electronic Engineering. He has been working on different problems in the physics of semiconductors, metal-semiconductor junctions, low-dimensional electronic structures, optics and acoustics. He has published more than 200 papers, including 14 Physical Review Letters and 48 Physical Review B/E. The total citation of his work is over 4000 times with H-index of 36. He has been invited to give more than 100 Plenary, Keynote or Invited Talks in many international conferences, universities and institutes. His current work is focused in the physics of acoustic and electromagnetic metamaterials.
