Abstract: The past decade has witnessed intensive research aimed at investigating the role of band-structure topology and discovering topological materials. In this talk, I will introduce our most recent progress on novel topological phases discovered in a well-known family of compounds, transition metal dichalcogenides (WTe2 and MoTe2). These phases include the Weyl semimetal, the monopole nodal ring and the higher-order topological insulator. Further, their band-structure topology gives rise to an exotic nonlinear Hall effect that exists with the time-reversal symmetry, distinct from the ordinary Hall effect.
Binghai Yan received his PhD in physics at IASTU, Tsinghua University in 2008. After that, he worked as a Humboldt scholar in Germany and a postdoc in Stanford University. In 2012, he became a group leader in the Max Planck Institute in Dresden, Germany. Since 2017, he joins the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, as an assistant professor. He is a youngscientist recognized for his theoretical study on topological materials, especially concrete predictions concerning materials that carry specific topological characteristics, many of which were verified by experiments. Recently, he was award the ARCHES Prize by the Minerva Foundation of Germany, and the Israel Physics Society Prize for Young Scientist
